In the latest episode of Mzansi Magic’s Shaka iLembe, a young Prince Shaka Zulu is finally introduced into the main storyline.

Ntando Zondi, age 15, plays Prince Shaka Zulu as a boy, and though audiences have already caught a glimpse of him in episode one, more of him is yet to come in future episodes.

In the show, Prince Shaka Zulu is the son of King Senzangakhona kaJama (Senzo Radebe) and Queen Nandi kaMbengi (Nomzamo Mbatha). Shaka Zulu was born while his parents were unmarried and is treated as an outcast later in life.

Zondi is a fresh face in the entertainment industry and is born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal. He’s currently in his first year of high school.

According to a press statement, Zondi was selected from a pool of hundreds of teens to play Prince Shaka.

The statement continued:

“He has no formal training in acting but has loved it for years, always dreaming of becoming an actor. When casting directors called him back for a second audition, he almost did not answer as it was an unknown number. Little did he know it was a call that would change his life.”

Zondi’s interests lie in film and entrepreneurship. In his final year of primary school, he was awarded certificates in drama, arts and culture, and academics.

In a statement, Zondi shared:

“Being part of this production is an honour and very special to me and my family. I cannot believe that I am part of a series that is so epic and tells an important story. I am so grateful for the opportunity and taking on the big role of young Shaka Zulu, who grows to become a formidable King in the future. For me, this is a life-changing experience.”

Shaka iLembe has been a successful show for DStv so far, drawing in 3.6 million viewers in its first weeks. It also reached number one on the DStv App in multiple African countries.
